Dragon Smoke

Dragon Smoke is a side project of four powerhouse musicians: Ivan Neville, Eric Lindell, and Galactic rhythm section Robert Mercurio and Stanton Moore, who were booked in 2003 as a  Jazzfest “SuperJam,” a tradition of putting together a band with musicians who don’t usually play together. Bay area blues star Lindell and New Orleans musical royalty Neville front the band on guitar and keyboard, respectively, and together on vocals, while Mercurio and Moore lock in the bass and drums. Material focuses on Lindell’s bluesy, blue-eyed soul and Neville’s R&B and funk, with some classic Galactic grooving on the bottom. Equally fun is the setlist, which can run from “Padlock” by Gerald Tillman to the Dyke & the Blazers classic “Let a Woman Be a Woman.” Every so often the band joins Lindell on the West Coast, but is more often only able to get together in New Orleans around Jazzfest; indeed, they’ve played the festival every year since their inception.
