Be a Guardian Angel of the Groove

Federal funding for public media has been eliminated. This represents $400,000 in the coming fiscal year for WWOZ, and we are counting on you to help make up the difference by becoming a Guardian Angel of the Groove. This new fund will specifically help replace dollars which have been revoked from WWOZ. This funding has historically been used for important infrastructure necessities including upkeep and maintenance for our broadcast transmitter, internet streaming for our worldwide audience, and necessary equipment.

Groove Gala: Low Ticket Alert!

Calling all Guardians of the Groove! We have less than 30 tickets left for the WWOZ Groove Gala! Join us on Thursday, September 11 for an indoor fest at Tableau Restaurant and Le Petit Theatre in the French Quarter. It's most definitely not your average gala: think Jazz Fest with open bars! There'll be amazing food and a music lineup that includes Irma Thomas, Cyril Neville, the New Orleans Nightcrawlers, Doreen Ketchens, the New Orleans Catahoulas, and Al "Little Fats" Jackson. After the Mainstage Showcase in Le Petit Theatre, we wrap up the night with dessert & dancing to grooves spun by WWOZ DJ Neil Pellegrin. Tickets are limited so please get yours today.

Video: Kyle Roussel at WWOZ

Kyle Roussel joined Dr. Al Colón on Jazz From Jax Brewery on July 16, 2025 to perform three songs: Dr. John's 'Dorothy,' James Booker's 'A Taste of Honey,' and Allen Toussaint's 'Southern Nights.' Kyle also talked at length about how he got started on his music career in New Orleans, getting hired by Shannon Powell as a young musician at the University of New Orleans, playing in church as a child, his new album, the immensely high standards New Orleans musicians meet, and much more. Our video team captured it all, and produced this beautiful 23 minute video.

Satchmo SummerFest Photos

Satchmo SummerFest was back at the New Orleans Jazz Museum earlier this month, with two days of steamy performances and special events in honor of the great Louis Armstrong. WWOZ volunteer photographer Demian Roberts braved the Swelter and helped us make this awesome gallery.

Showhost Profile: Duane Williams

"Gentle" Duane Williams, the host of our "What's New" show (Sunday, 10p to MIDNIGHT), grew up in Gentilly at a time when the station wasn't that much older than he was. For 8+ years starting in 2007, Duane volunteered at WWOZ, answering phones, picking up food for events, helping with Brass Pass distribution, etc, always working in the quiet, thoughtful, and gentle manner that became his signature. In September of 2015, Duane became the permanent host of "What's New" after many months of subbing. Asked about the challenges of programming a show with such an eclectic format, Duane says: "I love it! It's fun catching things all around the world." Duane describes WWOZ as a "moving, breathing entity. It keeps the history alive and makes it part of someone's life. It shines a spotlight on our culture here and that light keeps people connected." Thank you, Duane Williams, for all that you continue to do for the love of WWOZ. If "WWOZ means the World" to you, just know that you mean the world to us!

Summer Drinks

Summer Drink Recipes

For this August, we share two cool drink recipes from our cookbook, That Sounds Good! First up, it's Rock Star Drink from Glen David Andrews, which combines apple and ginger into a crisp cool libation. And Randy Fertel contributes the Mango Rumba, which uses WWOZ Mango Freeze.
