Show Host Profile: Charles Burchell

Charles Burchell, aka Charlie B, host of the Friday edition of Jazz from Jax Brewery, has for many years managed two careers (or "two loves," as he calls them), one as a psychologist and the other in broadcasting. "It's just been two parallel universes, and I like the way that it is." As for the current incarnation of his broadcasting universe--his WWOZ show--Charlie B invokes one of the essential elements of jazz: improvisation. "I go with the flow sometimes, I look out over the Mississippi River and that's inspiration, sometimes it's a change in the weather, sometimes it's the season, and the music will just flow. You get to hear me in the music."

Turkey Neck Gumbo

Recipe: Turkey Neck Gumbo

This month's recipe is a dark-roux gumbo with a couple of twists. It uses blackened-and-braised turkey necks (a recipe for which is included), and it includes poblanos rather than green bell peppers. It comes to us from Palm & Pine on N. Rampart near Bienville in the French Quarter.
