The New Birth Brass Band offers up energetic fusions of the traditional brass band repertoire with hip-hop, funk, jazz, and Mardi Gras Indian standards. The band was formed by acclaimed trumpeter James “Twelve” Andrews, and was one of the first to follow in the stylistic footprints of the pioneering Dirty Dozen and Rebirth Brass Bands. Other members have included current leader and bass drummer Cayetano “Tanio” Hingle, Corey Henry, Derrick Shezbie, Kenny Terry, Kerry Hunter, Reginald Steward, and the late tuba player Kerwin James, who wrote many of the band’s early hits, including “A. P. Tureaud” and the second-line staple, “Who Dat Call the Police?” The band tours regularly and has released several albums; their first, the 1997 D-Boy, was produced by the legendary Allen Toussaint and ranges from the raucous original title cut to updated versions of old-school tunes like “Jesus on That Mainline.” The most recent, the 2024 Live at the Jazz and Heritage Festival, captures the band in all its high-energy glory, including the original “Get the Hump Out Ya Back.”
