DJ Jubilee, the “King of Bounce,” is a venerable member of the New Orleans hip hop scene. Born Jerome Temple, the musician was raised in the St. Thomas Projects, attended Walter L. Cohen High School, and graduated from Grambling State University. In 1990, DJ Jubilee began hosting DJ block parties and performing at house parties in St. Thomas and other neighborhoods.
As the New Orleans rap scene was taking off, DJ Jubilee began creating his own brand of bounce music. His 1990 cassette single “Do the Jubilee All” got a lot of attention and is the first recorded use of the word “twerk.” He has released several albums over the years, including the 1998 Take It To the St. Thomas, which debuted at #61 on Billboard’s Top R&B albums chart. He engages in club and festival dates both as a headliner and in collaboration with numerous other artists, including a notable date in the fall of 2013 when he headlined the first bounce show ever to be played at Preservation Hall, along with the Big Easy Bounce Band.
