Bamboula 2000

Bamboula 2000 is an energetic and entrancing African drumming and dance collective which integrates a modern soul sound with African, Caribbean, and jazz influences. The group was founded in 1994 by percussionist Luther Gray, who had successfully lobbied for Congo Square, located in Armstrong Park, to be added to the National Register of Historic Places. Bamboula 2000’s unique mission is to help people perceive the connections between themselves and the cultural traditions of the African diaspora, winding through the Caribbean islands and ending up in New Orleans, eventually giving birth to jazz, funk, and the New Orleans sound. Bamboula 2000 has ireleased several records, notably the 2016 Threadhead-sponsored Up from Congo Square, has won numerous awards, including several Offbeat honors, and performs often in Congo Square and in other venues across New Orleans and the country.
